What is Darjeeling Tea?

Darjeeling tea is grown on the southern slopes of the Himalayan Mountains in the region of Darjeeling in India. It is cultivated at extreme altitudes, on steep slopes, under intensive sunshine in a generally cool climate.

Darjeeling tea has a distinct and unique flavor. Its annual harvest is limited, and its taste and aroma cannot be replicated anywhere else.

The name “Darjeeling” (also spelled Darjiling) comes from the Tibetan words, “dorje” meaning thunderbolt (originally the scepter of Indra) and “ling” a place or land, hence “the land of the thunderbolt.”
Darjeeling borders Bhutan and Nepal and is situated in the northern region of the West Bengal state in northeastern India. The district’s capital is also named Darjeeling and situated on a long, narrow mountain ridge of the Sikkim Himalayas.

Darjeeling is famous for its tea, which is often referred to as “the champagne of teas.” Tea has been a cash crop since 1856 and today is being cultivated in 87 tea gardens or estates.

Darjeeling known for the spectacular views it offers on the Himalayas, earned it the title “Queen of the Himalayas.” On a clear day from Observatory Hill one can see the whole Himalaya mountain range and Tiger Hill which offers a view on the majestic Kanchenjunga (8.598m).
